Jamaican dancehall star Shenseea showed Trinidadian soca star Denise ‘Saucy Wow” Belfon some love at a party to celebrate the release of her new song “Lick”.
In the song, Shenseea sings the popular chorus from Belfon’s song “Work’, which went viral on Tik Tok last year for the Put Yuh Back In It challenge.
“Lick’, which will be featured on Shenseea’s album Alpha due out March 11, is a collaboration with Grammy-award-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
When the song first dropped Caribbean fans accused Shenseea of stealing Belfon’s work. Shenseea addressed the issue via an Instagram live, stating that they sought clearance before using the song.
“Why would we risk getting sued?” she asked.
At her release party in New York on Friday night, Shenseea introduced Belfon, known as the Wining Queen, and said that as a woman she loves to support other women. She also thanked Belfon for helping her to clear the song for her to use.
Belfon told Loop News that everything was above board.
“I would love to send love and congrats to Shenseea, Megan thee Stallion and their recording labels Interscope, 300 entertainment, Warner Music Group and their management teams, Mr Romeich and Wassim Salxo ” Sal ” and the producers ” Murder on the Beatz ” for considering and using my song “Work /Put your back in it” on their mega-hit “Lick’, she said in a statement.
“I am very grateful and wish them the best of luck !! Let’s get it to number one on the Billboard charts ladies. Soca influences the world!’
‘Work” was produced in 2000 by Louie Vega for house music group Masters of Work. In 2002, the song earned Belfon a performance at the M.O.B.O awards in Miami where she won an award along with Masters of Work for the remix.
